Ever since dipping his toe into the waters of television directing with his first episode of The Flash last season, Kevin Smith has been grabbing up as many TV projects as he has podcasts (which, if you don’t know, he’s got a lot of podcasts). on the way later this season, as well as an upcoming episode of The Goldbergs that will be all about Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman. He was also attached to develop a Buckaroo Banzai series for Amazon, but he later dropped out of when it was revealed that Amazon was purposely excluding the original film’s creators. Television seems to have provided a career renaissance for Smith, and today it looks like there’s one more show to add to Smith’s growing TV resume. Please,

is reporting that Kevin Smith is developing a Sam and Twitch series for BBC America. The show will be a police procedural set in the world of Todd McFarlane’s Spawn and Smith will write, direct and serve as executive producer on the new series based on the characters’ Image Comics solo series.BBC America President Sarah Barnett said this about the characters and the new series:
“They were originally introduced in Spawn, and it’s Todd McFarlane’s comic book series about these big-city homicide detectives who face a series of super grizzly crimes that are connected to the occult. It’s kind of frightening and sort of gallows humor. It’s, again, procedural, but in a very modern, contemporary way. So each episode is closed ended, although there are certain character-serialized aspects to the storytelling.”
When asked when the series might be expected to debut, Barnett said:
“It’s just in development right now. But I bumped into Kevin Smith at Sundance and he is beyond himself excited about this, about the show.”
I have been a massive fan of Smith’s for almost two decades now (after seeing Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, characters which Smith will revisit for his next film, the recently announced Jay and Silent Bob Reboot). I also love Spawn and the world he inhabits, and Sam and Twitch are just great characters, so this news is an absolute win for me. Smith is such a huge comic book fan and pays so much respect to the source material. It’s great to see him finally get a chance to bring a comic book property to life himself.
